Catholic News Agency was founded in 2004, in response to Pope St. John Paul II’s call for a “New Evangelization." It is one of the fastest-growing Catholic news providers in the world.

CNA provides free, up-to-the-minute news affecting the Universal Church, giving particular emphasis to the words of the Holy Father and happenings of the Holy See, to any person with access to the internet. CNA is proud to offer free access to its news items to Catholic dioceses, parishes, and websites, in order to increase awareness of the activities of the universal Church and to foster a sense of Catholic thought and culture in the life of every Catholic. Though its focus is spread throughout the world, CNA closely covers the Catholic Church in the United States and news related to the creation of a culture of life.

Origins

The Catholic News Agency's roots begin with its sister agency, ACI Prensa, which was founded in Lima, Peru, in 1980 by Fr. Adalbert Marie Mohm (†1986)

Fr. Mohm, a German missionary, wanted to provide a steady flow of Catholic news to the secular media and to news readers, in order to increase the visibility of the Catholic Church in the public square and to help serve its mission.

Today ACI Prensa (www.aciprensa.com) is the largest and most visited online source of Catholic news in Spanish and Portuguese.

The editor-in-chief of Catholic News Agency is JD Flynn. Mr. Flynn has previously worked as Special Assistant to Bishop James Conley in the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska, and as chancellor of the Archdiocese of Denver. He has a licentiate in canon law from the Catholic University of America, and a master's degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Catholic News Agency is overseen by Mr. Alejandro Bermúdez, who serves as executive director of CNA and ACI Prensa. Mr. Bermúdez, a Peruvian journalist, received his training in Social Communications from the University of Lima. In addition to serving as head of CNA and ACI Prensa, he is also the Latin American correspondent for Our Sunday Visitor, the National Catholic Register, and the Spanish magazine Razón y Fe. He is also the host of Cara a Cara on EWTN.

In accord with its goal to provide Catholic news free of charge, CNA and ACI Prensa are funded, almost entirely, by gifts from our readers and benefactors.

Catholic News Agency is an apostolate of EWTN News.
