On the way to the Kingdom

Marjorie Campbell

With this debut of my regular column – On the Way to the Kingdom – I would like to deeply thank Catholic Womanhood for creating a forum by, for and about women of faith.  I write humor for women of faith, a brazen attempt to blend Erma Bombeck (herself a Catholic convert) with the teachings of John Paul II.  I hope you will weigh in, comment, scold when I need a scolding and share with the readership of Catholic Womanhood your own laughs and sorrows.  Most of all, I hope you will comment.  It is here, on a site for women of faith, that we can be with each other in a 21st century community of women trying our best to find the Kingdom of God.  We are so blessed by the efforts of the women who made this possible.  And I am honored to join so many talented women writers in faith.

I began to write humor many years ago and I approached a number of Catholic publications with the question, “Would you publish humor aimed at women of faith?”  Uniformly, editors told me, “Oh dear.  That’s a small market and, anyway, humor is too risky.”

I did not buy that.  Erma Bombeck, Shirley Jackson and Jean Kerr all entertained their generation of women with an often-irreverent, holy humor that both glorified and made real our daily, hectic and, yes, ridiculously chaotic lives as mother, wife and professional.  While times have changed, our need for humor has only increased.

I got my break when Crisis magazine folded its pages into the cyber-world and became www.insidecatholic.com.  I asked the editors, “May I write a humor column for you?”  ~ on September 21, 2007 they published my first piece “Who Wants Me Now?’: On the Way to the Kingdom.”  Since, they generously published many more such columns.  I am ever grateful for the support, editing, encouragement and comments of the staff and readership at www.insidecatholic.com.  They have been invaluable in my maturing as a writer.  I would like to thank, particularly, Margaret Cabaniss, without whose perspective and patience I might have given up my efforts.

Through my time at InsideCatholic.com, I remained uneasy that I was not reaching the target audience I sought:  women of faith and good humor trying their best to bring the Kingdom of God in the cluttered front door.  When Catholic Womanhood opened their Internet doors, I asked to come in and they have graciously offered me this opportunity to publish here a regular column On the Way to the Kingdom.

It’s not always popular to write humor in the crook of God’s arm.  Shortly after InsideCatholic.com started publishing my column, I was asked to syndicate the work on the condition that I delete all reference to Jesus Christ, God and Catholicism.  “Your humor,” they told me, “works without reference to religion.”

“Ludicrous,” I said in response, “if my writing works, it is only by the grace of my loving God who rescued me from radical feminism thereby restoring my good humor.  Without Him, I am neither funny, nor interested.”

Like so many women indebted to the Divine for their blessings and sanity, I want only to share our experience in worship to Him who saved us, and in reverence for His Mother without whose care, example and accessible love, we simply could not flourish and bloom.

All I need now is your participation here at Catholic Womanhood – make this your home, a place to comment, a forum to invite others in search of the Kingdom.  Here we can explore and find our feminine genius together, and we will bring the Kingdom of God a tad closer for all.
